After World War II, an enormous number of veterans pursued college degrees through the GI Bill of that era. This dramatic increase in the number of college students prompted the Florida legislature to convert the Florida State College for Women to coeducational Florida State University. In other words, veterans were instrumental to the establishment of our distinguished university!
Since becoming a coeducational university in 1947, Florida State has had the honor and privilege of calling itself “Seminoles” in tribute to the federally recognized Tribe’s resilience. As a sovereign tribe, the Seminole Tribe of Florida works closely with FSU to ensure that the use of the Seminole name is used with consistency to the Tribe’s values. As such, FSU does not have a mascot; “Seminoles” is instead a symbol of respect and honor.
